Homelessness Alleviation and Prevention

MCK Restaurant & Bar, one of Atlanta’s most popular and frequented restaurants, is launching its new charitable initiative, MCK Cares presents Homes 4 Hope, with a powerful mission: to combat Atlanta’s affordable housing crisis. The restaurant’s owners, Mitch, Chuk, and Khareem, are hosting the inaugural Homes 4 Hope Charity Gala in November 2024, raising funds to support affordable housing projects for low-income families and individuals.

This event aims to address one of the most critical issues in Atlanta today—affordable housing. With over 207,000 low-income households in Georgia facing housing shortages and homelessness rates rising, the founders of MCK Cares see an urgent need to take action. Through Homes 4 Hope, they seek to raise funds and awareness to drive real solutions for those most affected.

Affordable Housing Crisis:

  1. Housing Affordability:
    • 7.6 million low-income renters in the U.S. are extremely cost-burdened, meaning they spend more than 50% of their income on rent.
    • In Georgia alone, there is a shortage of 207,000 affordable rental homes for low-income families.
    • Over 10% of households in Georgia face severe housing cost burdens.
  2. Homelessness:
    • Nearly 600,000 Americans experience homelessness on any given night.
    • 30% of the homeless population in the U.S. consists of families with children.
    • In Atlanta, 3,200 people are experiencing homelessness, with many more at risk of losing their homes.
  3. Impact on Children:
    • Homeless children are twice as likely to experience developmental delays, learning difficulties, and mental health issues.
    • 1 in 30 children in the U.S. experiences homelessness annually.

Our Objective:

To actively contribute to efforts aimed at reducing homelessness by supporting shelters, providing essential resources, and advocating for sustainable solutions. By addressing the root causes of homelessness and advocating for affordable housing, we aim to make a lasting impact. This is not just about providing temporary relief but about creating long-term solutions that empower individuals and families to build better futures.

Why It Matters:

  • Human Dignity: Access to housing is a fundamental human right. Without it, people face insurmountable challenges that affect their health, safety, and overall well-being.
  • Community Stability: Stable housing is the cornerstone of a thriving community. When people have secure homes, they can contribute more effectively to the social and economic fabric of society.
  • Breaking the Cycle: By supporting affordable housing and homelessness prevention initiatives, we can help break the cycle of poverty and displacement, giving people the opportunity to rebuild their lives.
